Until 2020 happened, home office was not in everybody’s life, not even in their imagination. But since then, we needed to find a way to integrate our personal space into our new workspace without totally losing our home space. And the key to achieve that is organization (and a little bit of inspiration from Pinterest). Why? Because as you work in your home office, things stack and layer around you (used coffee mugs, a stack of files you keep meaning to put somewhere, software boxes, bills, orphaned pens) until one day, when something gets in your way or disappears, you suddenly realize that getting your home office organized is totally necessary.
Full home office organization is a big job. It tends to be overwhelming if you don’t have the proper help. That’s why we talked with our interior design team to share with you some tips. Not only to transform your current workspace into a true home office but to make it your personal comfortable where all your projects are going to launch!
1. Keep Desk Accessories Clean and Simple
If you organize anything in your home to turn it into a home office space, make it your desk. We recommend you to not work at your dinner table because you will not always have all you need next to you, but to assign a single desk to be your work desk. You’ll feel a lot better if it looks organized with all your tools. And the best way to achieve that is to purchase a few efficient and visually pleasing accessories that can give your desk a streamlined look such as cups for pens, a magazine holder for folders and small journals and a stacked drawer unit to keep papers and other small items out of sight.
2. Surround Yourself With Life
Studies have shown that if you have a plant or a flower nearby your workspace area you can increase and boost productivity by up to 15%! There has also been evidence that plants can decrease symptoms of poor health, like fatigue, nose and eye irritation, dry skin, and problems concentrating, by 25%.
It’s all about psychological engagement in the work environment in order to boost happiness and production!
3. Utilize Wall Space
This is often the one step people miss when organizing their office. There is so much more space available when you go vertical! For example, placing a calendar on the wall helps you keep a better eye on your planning needs. The result? You’ll feel far more efficient and in control of your time. You can also get a cork to pin inspiring clippings and random pieces of paper to surround yourself with ideas and creativity!
4. Set Up an Ergonomic Home Office
What equipment do you need to work? Do you have a desktop, laptop, tablet? How many monitors do you use? Do you look at books and physical paper often? Are there other peripherals you need, such as a microphone or stylus? Additionally, what type of work do you do with that equipment?
“The posture of the person sitting down really depends on what they’re doing with their hands.”
So before you make any changes, consider how you spend the bulk of your work time. Do you type for hours at a time? Are you a graphic designer who relies heavily on a mouse or stylus? If there is a task that you do for extended periods of time, then customize your setup to be safe and comfortable for that task.
5. Bring in Plenty of Shelving
No closet? No worries! Use open shelves to organize and style your home office. Keep it clean with baskets on the shelves to hold the messier work items, books on shelves from looking too disorganized and keeping them in order using decorative bookends.
Not into shelving? A cubby system can be another organizational tool! The beauty of a cubby system is that it’s naturally neat, symmetrical, and perfectly proportioned to give the appearance of organization. Slide decorative storage baskets into cubbies to hide items small or items that would otherwise look disheveled.
6. Personalize it!
Put some family and friend pictures around to look up for motivation and free up your mind with good memories every time you need! The benefits of this is to turn your workspace into a place where you can find everything you need to achieve your goals, and that includes your beloved ones.
